YORK foodies are in for a tasty treat this weekend when Michelin-starred chef Christopher Bower serves up some of his award-winning dishes.

Yorkshire boasts a large number of Michelin-starred restaurants, but until now, York has missed out.

Paul and Jacqui Boylan - who own Holmwood House hotel on Holgate Road - are launching their first “pop-up restaurant”, with Christopher Bower, which will operate at the hotel on Friday and Saturday.

Paul and Jacqui have run Holmwood House purely as a bed and breakfast for the past 12 years, but describe themselves as frustrated restaurateurs.

After being put in touch by a mutual friend, they have joined forces with Bradford-born Bower, who has carved out a career in London and the South East since the mid-1990s, earning a Michelin star and three AA rosettes during his time as head chef at Thackeray’s in Royal Tunbridge Wells.

He has also worked at celebrity haunts including The Ivy and Harvey Nichols Fifth Floor in central London.

Paul and Jacqui have plans for several more events in 2018, and hope that this weekend will prove a success.

Paul said they were very excited about the venture.

“We’re keen to appeal to residents as much as our guests at the hotel.

“The more support we get, the more we can bring this kind of experience to York.”

Dishes on the menu this weekend include aged venison loin carpaccio and smoked short rib of beef - a selection Christopher describes as hearty and warming.

He also stresses that the meat in particular has been sourced locally to him from suppliers practising sustainability.

He regularly travels around the country doing residencies and pop-ups at different venues.

He said: “It gives me a chance to meet the customers - you don’t get an awful lot of chance to do that when you’re working for someone else.

“I also get the opportunity to cook whatever I like, and show what I can do.”

The pop-up menu costs £40, and is available on Friday and Saturday.
