85 years ago

A successful ball organised by Mr and Mrs Adrian Scrope in aid of the Malton Typhoid Relief Fund was held at Sledmere House.

Thanks to the generosity of Sir Richard Sykes, more than 600 guests danced the night away in the famous Library and enjoyed a catering feast donated by local farmers and served by voluntary workers.

The London and North-Eastern Railway Company had decided not to fill the vacancy of District Superintendent at Leeds, caused by the death of Mr Thomas Storey.

The present Leeds North-East Area District Superintendent’s department was instead to be merged into the York district under the supervision of Mr T H Royle, District Superintendent at York.

And the Yorkshire Skating Association had decided to hold a Yorkshire Amateur skating championship in Carlton, on its fish pond.

Starting at 1.45pm, over a one-mile course, skaters had the option of either a half-mile novice handicap, a quarter-mile open handicap, or a mixed pairs race.

50 years ago

Fire had caused damage estimated at thousands of pounds at Croda Chemical Works, Rawcliffe Bridge, near Selby.

Firemen battling to prevent the blaze spreading had however managed to confine it to just one chemical plant which was unfortunately completely burnt out.

Because of the high fire risk from large quantities of chemicals at the factory, fire brigades from Goole, Thorne and Castleford were also called out to help tackle the blaze.

In North Yorkshire, the five-platform Church Fenton railway station had won the Eastern Region’s 1967 best-kept stations competition.

With thirty trains a day stopping at Church Fenton, the responsibility for cleanliness and tidiness of the place went to Mr Bate and leading porters.

The £1 cash prize was divided equally among its five staff members.

20 years ago

The Queen Mother was recovering well from a successful hip replacement operation, according to Buckingham Palace.

However, in view of the seriousness of the operation the 97-year-old was unable to receive any visitors at the London hospital.

And Berwick Kaler announced he would be back at Christmas for his 20th York panto, boosted by record audiences for Aladdin.

As the laughter died away on the infamous riotous last night at the Theatre Royal, dame Berwick stepped forward to announce his return in Beauty And The Beast.
