A CARE home with 66 beds is set to be built in Green Lane near the new Aldi store off Water Lane and the large Redrow housing development underway in Clifton.

The complex on the site of former grain stores and a wartime airfield will also have a café and cinema.

City of York planners on Thursday evening unanimously approved the full planning application from LNT Care Developments.

They heard that the care home would be three storeys in height and would be formed in an L shape fronting onto Green Lane with the rear wing running to the rear of the residential properties.

Cllr Ann Reid told the meeting that concerns had been expressed that the building would overlook adjacent houses.

She was advised that it was proposed the home would be 24 metres from other properties to avoid overshadowing.

Cllr Peter Dew moved to approve the application, saying: “We need more accommodation of this sort in York and this is a really good use of what is a vacant site.

“I don’t think it will affect the neighbours at all and it is near enough to bus stops.”

Planning chairman Cllr Nigel Ayre said the site was ideal and close to bus routes and he supported the application.

A new vehicular access will be provided adjacent to the Aldi supermarket with a small area of car parking provided.

Concerns were raised that there might not be enough parking for visitors, but the meeting was reassured by a representative of the applicant that a lot of staff don’t use their spaces.

A report to the meeting says York is currently short of 657 residential and nursing care beds and, this will rise as the council closes care homes not fit for purpose and there is an anticipated 50 per cent increase in the over 75s population.
