A YORK MP is to meet with the Post Office to discuss the recent closure of a branch in York.

The Dringhouses branch, in Tadcaster Road, closed suddenly on November 21 last year, and since then the Mace shop that it was situated inside has also closed.

The Post Office told The Press it was “working hard” to reopen the branch, and that it had an interested party.

It is unclear whether the branch would reopen at a new site or at the same location.

York Outer MP Julian Sturdy said: “It was disappointing news when the Tadcaster Road post office closed recently.

"Residents in Dringhouses will be wanting answers over the future of this vital community asset.

“The lack of information provided by representatives of the Post Office since the closure has been disappointing, particularly over whether they are looking at reopening on Tadcaster Road or other nearby sites.

“I have therefore secured an urgent meeting with the Post Office to push for assurances that all efforts are being made to reopen the Dringhouses branch at the earliest opportunity.”

Mr Sturdy is encouraging residents who are concerned about the closure of the branch to get in touch with him so he can pass on their views to the Post Office.

A Post Office spokesman said: “We sincerely apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by the continued temporary closure of Dringhouses post office.

"We understand and appreciate how much communities rely on our services and would like to reassure customers that we are working hard to restore services to the community as quickly as possible.”

Following the closure of the shop, a spokeswoman for Mace said: “The vast majority of our stores are owned by independent retailers, as was this store on Tadcaster Road.

"Unfortunately the owner has taken the decision to close the store and at present we are unable to confirm whether it will reopen.”
