BOTH City of York Council and North Yorkshire County Council have confirmed they have no ongoing or active contracts with Carillion, the collapsed construction and outsourcing giant.

The firm has a small office in the former council offices in Mill House in North Street, York.

Just 10 days ago Carillion posted a recruitment advert for a York-based area operations director, with a salary up to £60,000, as it was “mobilising a multimillion-pound contract providing services to key defence sites in the North of England”.

A subsidiary company, CarillionAmey, had contracts to deliver facilities management services at military sites across the north of England including York, estate management and grounds maintenance services.

Major York construction work by Carillion includes the £29 million Joseph Rowntree School building in New Earswick, which opened in 2010.

It was named the most versatile learning environment at the Excellence In Building Schools for the Future awards in London and a finalist, alongside City of York Council and construction partner Carillion, in the Innovation In Student Engagement category.

And in 2007 the new headquarters of City of York Council’s neighbourhood services team - the ecoDepot, off Hazel Court - was designed by Carillion Building Design, of Leeds and three other firms.

The collapse of one of the UK’s largest construction companies has sent shockwaves across the country, with firms outlining the impact, including its partners on the A1 Leeming to Scotch Corner improvements.

Construction firm Morgan Sindall, which is working on the joint venture with Carillion, is “committed to completing these projects as planned”.

The group added the impact is “not expected to be material”.

Highways England said the news about Carillion would not affect the timetable of the A1 upgrade programme or cause delays to the finish date.

A statement said: “We have been monitoring the situation for some time and Carillion has kept us informed throughout.

“This has enabled us to develop contingency plans to ensure the continued safe delivery of any schemes that Carillion is involved in on behalf of Highways England.”
