A YELLOW warning for snow and ice has been issued for York and North Yorkshire - and there could be severe gales later in the week.

The Met Office says occasional heavy wintry showers will blow in to Yorkshire from the west tomorrow, most frequent in western areas and increasingly turning to snow at lower levels.

The Yellow warning has been put in place from 4am on Tuesday to 11am on Wednesday.

A second Yellow warning for wind has been issued from 9pm on Wednesday to 1pm on Thursday.

York is currently forecast to get snow by mid to late afternoon and early evening.

There may be more wintry showers on Wednesday, and then there is a risk of severe gales and heavy rain on Wednesday night and in the early hours of Thursday.

Gusts of up to 54 mph are currently being forecast for York at 6am on Thursday, and 57 mph at Malton and Pickering, enough to bring trees down and cause other disruption, followed by further blustery, wintry showers.
