A CAR is believed to have been deliberately set alight in a village near York in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters were called to a report of a car on fire on a driveway in Main Street, Elvington, at about 2.40am.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire fire service said: "Cause is believed to have been deliberate ignition."

The fire was put out using one hose reel and one breathing apparatus.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman added: "A white saloon car was damaged in the blaze which is being treated as suspicious.

"Inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances."
