A CRAFT brewery and tap room is planning to triple its production, create an open-plan street kitchen and 11 new jobs by hopping into the building next door.

Brew York, located in a warehouse off Walmgate, has recently put a planning permission application into York City Council to expand into the former York Boxing Club premises, which was originally a maltings, where grain was malted for brewing.

Brew York co-founders Wayne Smith and Lee Grabham, who opened the brewery and venue in April 2016, already have 17 employees and hope to celebrate their expansion on their second birthday.

If they are granted planning permission in March they will reconfigure the existing space to increase production, extend the tap room and build the kitchen.

York based food outlet Street Cleaver would be a permanent vendor and there would also be various street food pop-ups.

The expanded Brew York would also play host to beer festivals and offer dedicated space for weddings and parties, as well as meetings and training sessions for businesses.

Co-founder and managing director Wayne said: “Lots of our customers have told us they love our brews and really enjoy visiting our tap room to see where our beer is made.

“With our expansion plans we want to create more jobs to grow our Brew York family so that we can increase brewing capacity and spread the love a little further.

“This will also mean we can get more of our brews out there in pubs and bars across the country so more people can enjoy what we’re doing.

“We’re also hoping to be exporting into Europe and even further afield.”

The former home brewers with a passion for beer also plan to install a lab and a small scale version of their current brewing system where they will monitor quality and fine tune their latest concoctions.

It will also mean that they can offer classes on how to brew, to residents and businesses looking to offer their employees a different type of team meeting.

Brew York currently produces 13,400 pints of beer a week.

Co-founder and head brewer Lee said: “We’re really excited by our plans to increase the amount we brew each week three-fold and are already thinking about all the different beers we’ll be able to make.

“It would mean that not too long after Brew York’s second birthday we’d be able to brew more than ten times the weekly amount we were brewing when we launched in 2016.

“If someone would have told me a few years ago when Wayne and I were home brewing in our sheds that we’d be expanding our own brewery on this scale, I never would’ve believed them.

“It’s been a lot of hard work, but it’s always well worth it when we see people enjoying our beers in the tap room sitting just a few metres away from where it is brewed.”
