A LARGE amount of jewellery has been stolen from a shop in York city centre.

North Yorkshire Police said two men entered Cavendish Jewellers, on Stonegate, at 7.47pm on Saturday, after the store had closed.

A police spokesman added: "They stole a large amount of jewellery from the display cabinets before leaving the shop at 8.20pm.

"They entered and left from the direction of Duncombe Place, which is at the rear of the building."

One of the men is described as average build and height. He wore a dark Puffa-style jacket with a hood and a beanie hat. He may have been wearing glasses.

The other man is described a medium build, wearing a dark Puffa-style body warmer, dark Nike trainers and a beanie hat.

They were carrying a backpack and possibly two dark-coloured holdall bags.

Police are currently making extensive inquiries as part of their investigation, which includes reviewing CCTV footage.
