CCTV cameras will monitor traffic in a new 'experimental bus lane' in York from next month.

City of York Council will install the new bus lane for 18 months in Low Poppleton Lane, with construction due to start on Tuesday (JAN 2), for up to ten days.

A spokesman said the changes have been proposed as an alternative to the current rising bollards "to help increase pedestrian and cycle safety by stopping people ignoring the current restrictions".

Automatic numberplate recognition (ANPR) cameras will be in place along the bus lane to record offenders, with motorists issued with penalty charges of £60 for breaching the restrictions.

The plans were agreed in consultation with the executive member for transport and planning by the Director for Economy and Place in September, and work will mean all traffic - with the exception of local bus services and the Manor School minibus - will be diverted during the construction work, which will take place Monday to Friday between 9.30am and 4pm until January 12, depending on the weather.

The council spokesman said there was "likely to be a certain amount of disruption" during construction, and temporary signs have been put in place to warn motorists in advance of the new bus lane.

Comments on the trial can be sent to lowpoppletonlane.trial@york.gov.uk and will be considered before a decision is made whether to make the scheme permanent or to revert to the old restrictions.
