A LEADING York councillor has called for assurances about the impact on non-military personnel of the proposed closure of barracks in Strensall and Fulford Road.

Lib Dem interim deputy leader Andrew Waller has written to Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson to seek urgent clarification about Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Strensall, which is due to shut in 2021, and Imphal Barracks, which is scheduled for closure in 2031.

He said that although decisions regarding military personnel were currently underway; he wanted assurances for other staff such as civil servants that they could remain in York.

He said:“York is proud of its relationship with the armed forces and residents place great worth on the contribution both barracks make to the community.

“The closures of Queen Elizabeth and Imphal barracks have significant and negative implications on the City of York, the people within those communities and on jobs connected to the barracks.”
