DOZENS of children from across York were crowned Students of the Year at a special award ceremony.

The A-level faculty recognised and rewarded ‘Students of the Year’ at the York College A-level Awards Evening, held at the Merchant Taylors Hall in York.

Glyn Jones, assistant principal for A-levels at the college, welcomed the students and their families, and college principal Alison Birkinshaw gave an introductory speech. The vote of thanks was given by York College governor, Owen Trotter.

The guest speaker, former A-level student Alex Linsley, left York College is 2007 to progress to Oxford University where he gained a First Class Honours degree in economics and management.

Alex has since enjoyed a successful career in the wine industry and is currently the director of insight and business development at Liberty Wines Ltd.

Glyn Jones, assistant principal for A-levels said: “Meeting up again with former students, seeing them so animated after experiencing their first term at universities all around the country, was very enjoyable. The students, supported by their families, friends and former college tutors, were excited to be back - it is clear they have all made an easy transition from college to university. All the tutors within the College’s A Level Faculty are extremely proud of their achievements.”
