AN EMPLOYEE has died after collapsing at work at a York sweet factory.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance was called out, along with two Yorkshire Ambulance Service road ambulances, after the employee fell ill at the Tangerine confectionery factory in Low Poppleton Lane, Nether Poppleton.

The helicopter landed at the nearest safe landing place, on nearby school playing fields, during the incident on Wednesday afternoon.

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokeswoman said yesterday it was a medical case and could not comment further, and nor could a spokeswoman for Tangerine, who said it was a ‘non-production’ matter and private.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said today it was aware of the incident and had made initial inquiries, which had established that the incident was not one which was reportable to the HSE, adding: "HSE therefore does not intend to take further action."

The firm, which employs more than 200 people at the York factory, makes sweets such as Sherbet Fountains, popcorn, marshmallows and mint humbugs.
