POLICE were called to help a man in a "distressed state" in North Yorkshire.

The incident happened in Scarborough yesterday evening.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "Police attended Ireton Street, Scarborough, at around 7.30pm to help a man in a distressed state.

"Officers spoke to the man for some time and the surrounding area was cordoned off to allow police to deal with the incident."

The spokesman added that the man, who is in his 20s, agreed to leave the scene with officers at around 11.20pm and nobody was injured.

"He is currently in police custody and will receive the appropriate help and support," the spokesman said.
