YORK Central MP Rachael Maskell MP has called on business minister, Margot James, to say when an urgent review of business rates would be carried out.

She said that in his Budget on March 8 the Chancellor Philip Hammond announced that a full review of business rates would take place but this has not happened.

Ms Maskell said: "In York we are seeing long standing businesses close or move out of the city centre because of the high cost of business rates and the unfairness of the Government’s changes to the system.

"York is especially disadvantaged because of the high cost of rents in the city which result in over inflated property prices and high rateable values which do not reflect the footfall on the high street. Some landlords do not live in York and are known to operate through agencies.

"The business rates freeze is just a sticking plaster for a broken system."
