THE cause of a blaze which has severely damaged an industrial unit next to the A64 near York is believed to be accidental.

Today, firefighters have revisited the unit, opposite the Highwayman Cafe in the Stockton on the Forest area, and have been checking for hotspots and damping down.

Crews were first called to the fire at about 4pm yesterday, and six fire engines were sent to the scene.

A North Yorkshire fire service spokesperson said the blaze was under control by 5.45pm and crews were dampening down at 8pm.

The unit, which is approximately 30 metres by 10 metres, contained two workshops and both have suffered "severe fire, heat and smoke damage", the spokesperson added.

"The cause is believed to be accidental," the spokesperson confirmed.

Police were also called to the incident and left at 6.40pm yesterday after assisting the fire service with road closures.

Heavy traffic built up around the incident.
