YORKSHIRE Water has turned to drones to help it identify leaks on its underground pipe network in York and North Yorkshire.

The company hopes the high flying technology will help it prevent millions of litres of water escaping from pipes.

The drones have flown above 30km of underground water pipes stretching from Elvington, near York, to Rotherham, conducting topographical surveys and locating hard-to-find assets such as inspection chambers.

A spokesman said the company repaired thousands of water leaks each year, which often occurred in winter as pipes froze and thawed.

He said the use of drone technology was increasing every day, giving a greater understanding of the condition of the infrastructure, allowing the company to inspect and survey at height in a safer and more efficient way.
