YOUNG members of a Brownie group have made a special gift for patients at York’s St Leonard’s Hospice.

The 74th York Brownies from Girlguiding North Yorkshire South, based in Haxby, has created a handmade advent calendar for patients at the hospice to open and enjoy.

The advent calendar consists of 25 hand decorated, white paper bags containing gifts such as chocolates, sweets and toiletries. Each day throughout December, a patient can open a bag to find a surprise gift inside.

Explaining how the idea came about, Emma Chester, one of the brownie leaders, said: “My dad Bernard was admitted to the hospice a couple of weeks ago. We had the idea of making an advent calendar this year which fitted with our theme this term of ‘Being Kind’. The other leaders knew about my connection with St Leonard’s so it seemed the obvious choice to donate the calendar to.”

Emma has two daughters, one Brownie and one Guide, who have also helped make the advent bags. She added: “The Brownies enjoyed making the bags and it’s taught them that Christmas isn’t just about receiving from Santa but about thinking of others.”
