COUNCIL chiefs are set to vote on whether to push ahead with plans to apply for a national Purple Flag award to promote York city centre as a safe and enjoyable place for a night out.
Last March the council agreed to make contact with York Business Improvement District (BID), Make It York, and North Yorkshire Police to start exploring a Purple Flag application following a proposal from Liberal Democrat councillors.
Purple Flag is an accreditation process for town and city centres, similar to Green Flag for parks and Blue Flag for beaches.
However, North Yorkshire Police has expressed concerns.
Force chiefs fear that the scheme is highly labour intensive for little benefit and that achieving and promoting Purple Flag status could lead to an increase in York’s popularity as a drinking destination. Officers fear this could lead to increases in crime and anti-social behaviour.
The executive is also due tonight to consider proposals to increase service fees from January 1 and approve its next steps for 140 houses on the site of Lowfields School in Acomb.
