PLANS to close another care home in York look set to get the go-ahead tomorrow from City of York councillors.

The authority has been out to consultation with residents, relatives and staff over the option of closing Windsor House, in Ascot Way, Acomb, early next year.

It says the home’s rooms are too small and its corridors too narrow, and it lacks en suite facilities and adequate social space.

It is proposing the closure as part of a project to modernise accommodation for older people, with the authority on target to deliver more than 900 new units of accommodation across the city.

Seventeen people are currently living at Windsor House.

Councillors will read a report about the six-week consultation over the closure which took place from October 9 to November 20 with residents, their relatives, carers, and staff, before making their decision. The report says the response to the consultation has been calm.

Officers put forward possible uses of the site in order of preference, including that it should become a centre for disabled children, should be used for housing or sold to raise funds. The report also gives details of the procedure for moving residents to other accommodation.

Michael Melvin, who is the assistant director for adult social care at the council, said: “Whatever decision is taken by the executive, we will continue to support residents, relatives and staff.”

Martin Farran, corporate director for health, housing and adult social care, said: “The moving homes safely protocol has been established and has worked well to support staff and residents throughout the process. Our focus remains on supporting our residents and the actions we take now will ensure that they – and future generations - will have the best possible quality of life, with access to modern accommodation across the city, and ensure that we can meet the needs of York’s ageing population.”

The council has already closed Woolnough House, Willow House, Oakhaven, Grove House, Fordlands and Oliver House over the last few years.

The executive meeting tomorrow will start at 5.30pm at City of York Council’s West Offices.
