CYNICS may say we’ve been here before. But let’s hope the arrival of diggers at the site of York’s Community Stadium really does represent a breakthrough, not another false start.

The much-delayed 8,000 seat stadium is due to open in 2019. The project includes not only the stadium, but also a swimming pool, cinema with IMAX screen, gym, dance studio, climbing frames and a sports hall. There will also be an NHS centre, Explore library and York Against Cancer shop.

That all sounds good. But it is the stadium which is the heart of things. There’s a lot of work to be done yet before it opens. There must be no more delays.
