In the rubbish and recycling calender for 2017-2018 it states that your bins have to be put out by 7am on day of collection. On the City of York Council website it states that they have to be put out between 7pm and 7am,. Bearing in mind that not everyone has access to the council website it would be a good thing if the calender and website agreed.

It also states on the website that the bins should be placed outside the property in a suitable place otherwise they may not be emptied and residents could be fined for not complying with such regulations.

If this is true why do not similar regulations apply to the staff who empty the bins? After they have emptied the bins they then throw them anywhere for the house holder to retrieve - sometimes on the road, or blocking footpaths and driveways. Sometimes the bins are damaged in the process. Why can’t they put them back where they found them?

77 Squadron memories

THE story of the 77 Squadron (Press, November 20) brought back many memories, I was 10 years old, the flight path of the bombers went over our house. On summer days we used to count how many went out for a raid, but as we know they did not all come back, so they should not be forgotten.

Blood group

The next meeting of the York Haematology Support Group for people dealing with blood cancer will be held on Thursday December 7 at 7pm at Huntington Working Mens Club.

Patients, families, carers, friends and newcomers are welcome, no need to book just turn up on the night, ample free parking. It will be an informal get-together with no speaker. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the members a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. There is no meeting in January.

Beware the tax scammers

We got a call a few days ago purporting to be from HM Revenue & Customs telling us we owed a substantial sum of money and that legal proceedings had been instigated.

At this point I hung up, knowing full well it was rubbish.

However, I did 1471 the call and this is the number that came up: 074 413 93001. No doubt they change it regularly but just thought anyone else could check and see if it’s the same one. When people get this type of call, they shouldn’t be scared, just hang up.

Editor’s note: The Press rang this number to see what would happen. We got a recorded message saying: ‘Your call cannot be completed. This number is no longer active’.

Is Brian beardist?

Does Brian Lawson (I’m heartily sick of ridiculous beards, November 27) realise his comments may well upset one of the most important bearded gentlemen of this time of year? Yes, I refer to Mr Clause.

I note he mainly refers to gentlemen within the film industry. Therefore he surely has no objection to the man in the street cultivating facial hair.

My beard has been in situ for excess of fifty years. Once a deep red colour, it is now a mature silver. No, I did not grow my beard from choice, but due to a skin issue.

Our Labrador is a keen supporter of my growth and has been so since we went to choose our puppy, who in the end chose us.
