THE MP for Selby and Ainsty has met with the Minister for Rail to discuss access to the town's station.

Nigel Adams organised the meeting with Paul Maynard MP to outline the importance of securing step free access at Selby station, increasing safety and convenience for all passengers and staff.

Mr Adams invited representatives of Selby & District Rail Users Group (SADRUG), to attend the meeting last week, and said the initial feasibility work had already been completed by Network Rail.

He said that funding was needed, but Selby station was in a strong position to progress, with an already large footfall set to increase as the local community grows.

The Rail Minister said that from 2019 more funding would be available for Access for All schemes.

He said: "I was pleased to meet with Nigel and representatives of the Selby District Rail Users Group. It was good to learn more about the pressing need for access improvements at Selby station and I look forward to refining the Access for All scheme in the near future to help move projects like this forward."

Terry French, representing SADRUG, said: "We’d like to thank the Rail Minister very much for taking the time to let us put our case forward. It’s been a very productive meeting and we look forward to working together to try and secure lift access at the station as soon as possible."

Mr Adams said: "Accessibility at Selby station is an important issue for many residents, and I am grateful to the Rail Minister for meeting with us to discuss the current situation.

"I am hopeful that we can work collaboratively to ensure that the station is accessible to all users, whether they are starting their journey in Selby or using the station as an interchange. As the population of Selby increases, and the use of the station increases, it is important that we get this right for residents."
