FOOTFALL on York’s Parliament Street could reach one million during the full period of this year’s St Nicholas Fair, destination management organisation Make it York said.
The shopping extravaganza, which runs for 37 days, has been pulling in large crowds every day since it launched on November 16.
Running until December 22, the annual festive fair involves Scandinavian style cabins in Parliament Street, St Sampson’s Square, The Judge’s Lodging and Coppergate.
The traditional chalets are adorned with twinkling lights, creating a magical after-dark experience for shoppers.
Make it York said 423 coaches have so far booked to visit the fair this year, bringing with them more than 23,000 visitors.
In addition, it said hotels and guests houses are all reporting very strong forward bookings.
Footfall on Parliament Street in 2016 for the full period of the St Nicholas Fair was 960,000. This was up by just under 50,000 on the previous year. Chris Price, head of city centre and markets for Make It York, said: “The St Nicholas Fair is in full swing and so far all the feedback has been very positive. Early indications are that we could reach a footfall of one million visitors into Parliament Street by the end of the fair.”
