RESIDENTS are being urged to educate themselves about norovirus to protect themselves and others this winter.

Norovirus causes a sudden feeling of sickness, vomiting and diarrhoea, while some people might have a slight fever, headaches, stomach cramps and aching limbs. Symptoms usually last between one and two days but the severity and duration of symptoms can vary from person to person.

If you suspect you have had the virus in the last 48 hours, do not visit hospitals or GP surgeries because it will spread rapidly.

Phone your GP or NHS 111 if you are concerned or need medical advice, but there is no treatment for it.

However, good hygiene will help reduce the chances of catching norovirus.

Dr Andrew Phillips, the Vale of York’s Clinical Commissioning Group’s joint medical director, said: “Practise good hygiene by regularly washing your hands with soap and water and cleaning your home with bleach-based cleaners.

“If you do catch norovirus be sure to get lots of rest and drink plenty of fluids. Eat plain foods such as bread, pasta and rice if you feel up to it.”
