A YORK woman has been fined after bags full of her rubbish were dumped in East Yorkshire.

Eight black bin bags and seven carrier bags containing a printer, vacuum cleaner parts, a rucksack, food and genebral household waste were discovered at the side of the road in Sandy Lane, Harpham, near Driffield.

Marie Greenwood, of Barkston Road, Chapelfields, York, appeared before Beverley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday where she pleaded guilty to failing in her duty of care by not checking she was using an authorised waste carrier to collect the rubbish.

The court heard Miss Greenwood had paid a man to take away her waste, but after it had been collected from her home it was fly-tipped in Harpham.

She did not check whether the man had a valid waste carriers’ licence and did not get a receipt.

The fly-tip was reported to East Riding of Yorkshire Council on 12 March this year and a streetscene enforcement officer was sent to investigate.

Evidence was found at the scene which related to Miss Greenwood.

Miss Greenwood was fined £40 and was ordered to pay £80 costs and a £30 victim surcharge, after magistrates took into account her financial circumstances.

The council continues to warn residents that they are responsible for disposing of waste properly and legally, either by taking it to their local household waste recycling site, by hiring a licensed waste carrier or using the council’s bulky waste service.
