YORK’S historic bar walls and Clifford’s Tower will remain purple until Friday to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer.

Campaigner Jean Clark has spearheaded the campaign in York, which will see the city centre landmarks lit up in the bright colours as part of the Purple Lights for Hope campaign.

The 61-year-old, of Herman Walk, Foxwood, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013, has arranged for the ancient tower and the walls, from Lendal Bridge to the War Memorial, in Station Rise, to be illuminated in purple, with the help of City of York Council.

The campaign calls on individuals and organisations across the UK to light focal points up purple in villages, towns and cities throughout November, in order to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer and remember those who have sadly died of the disease.

Cllr Carol Runciman, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Health, spoke with Jean yesterday to discuss the campaign and her own fight against pancreatic cancer.

She said: “It was an absolute pleasure to meet to Jean and discuss this wonderful campaign at length with her.

“It is so important that the public understand the symptoms behind this aggressive and destructive cancer.

“I am delighted that we have been able to support Jean by lighting historic York purple support the UK’s Purple Lights for Hope campaign.”

Early symptoms of pancreatic cancer include abdominal pain, Jaundice and an inability to digest food.

Spotting the early signs of pancreatic cancer is vital to beating the disease and anyone who has any concerns should see their local GP immediately.
