BUS users have been urged to use two bus services in the Selby area, after they were given financial support by North Yorkshire County Council.

Commercial operators did not come forward to help the 493 Sherburn to Pontefract or the 42 Selby, Cawood and York services, after Utopia Coaches ceased trading in August, leaving some communities in the Selby area without any bus service.

These services were not replaced immediately as the indications were that the services may be picked up commercially by other operators. However, the commercial bus market has not provided an alternative service.

Last week, the county council announced it would support replacements for the services which started on Monday, October 30.

Councillor Don Mackenzie, executive member for public transport, said: "On this occasion the council was able to respond to public concerns about the lack of replacement services. However, it is important that these services are well used so that passenger numbers build to a level where the authority can continue to support the services in the future."
