85 years ago

The mystery of Malton’s outbreak of typhoid fever deepened after an official report of the bacteriological examination of samples of Malton water was received.

The report stated that the water was “exceptionally pure”.

While the authorities were now left with no clue to the origin of the epidemic two more victims of the outbreak had died, bringing the death-roll to three.

The number of cases notified had increased from 65 to 75 with several new cases added to the danger list.

Accommodation for typhoid cases at the York Fever Hospital was now taxed to its utmost, the “Yorkshire Herald” was informed that it would not be possible to receive any further patients.

And gales which had swept the East coast had forced shipping to take shelter, after a number of vessels had been compelled to stay in Bridlington Bay due to heavy seas.

In Bridlington sun blinds had been torn and damaged by wind and in Prince Street the window of a large store had been blown in.

Members of Scarborough’s South Cliff Golf Club had to pay bigger membership fees because of the new breathalyser test.

Full members had to pay an extra three guineas a year, country member’s two guineas and those in the junior section nine guinea.

Brian Jones 25, guitarist with the Rolling Stones and Prince Stanislas Baron de Watteville lossowski de Rola, 24, pop singer, had both appeared at the Inner London Sessions on drug charges.

Jones was sentenced to nine months imprisonment and refused bail pending appeal.

Five people including a woman, had been injured in a fight outside popular student pub Charles XII, Main Street, Heslington.

All five of those injured were students with two requiring hospital treatment.
