85 years ago

There were only a few days of cubbing left before the regular hunting season opened in its full pageant.

Cubbing operations on a whole had been satisfactory in the North though in some Yorkshire countries scenting conditions had not been helpful.

They had however improved with recent rain.

For the British housewife there had been a noticeable increase in the use of aluminium ware, bringing the 1930s kitchen up to date.

Aluminium at the time was also considered one of the best ways of saving labour, due to its weight.

There were also many other ways in which aluminium was used apart from kettles and saucepans.

Many housewives had on the mantelshelf a row of brightly polished aluminium canisters with printed labels containing tea, coffee, rice, sugar, etc.

50 years ago

One hundred and fifty firemen fought a blaze at the Kellogg’s cereal factory at Stretford, Manchester.

The heat was so intense that water from the fire hoses had turned to steam.

A large amount of the firemen had been overcome by smoke and treated in hospital as the blaze which had swept through the ground floor was described as the worst fire in the area for many years.

The Sheriff of York, Coun J E Coleclough, opened St Luke’s new £6,000 church hall in Burton Stone Lane.

After a two-year campaign to raise money volunteers now had the enjoyable task of decorating and preparing the hall ready to be used by the congregation.

And pictured in the Yorkshire Evening Press were pupils from Huby’s primary, running home after their first morning in the new school.

20 years ago

York’s lucky bingo winners had done it again, after another two players had scooped big jackpot wins on the National Game, putting the city’s two bingo halls among the luckiest in Britain.

A 57-year-old grandmother won £46,000 at the Clifton Club and one winner claimed a prize of £106,000 at the Mecca club in Fishergate.

Top boxers Chris Eubank and Prince Naseem Hamed were involved in a sparring match at Heathrow Airport as hundreds of passengers in Terminal Three watched as the two men exchanged blows.

World featherweight champion Prince Naseem allegedly taunted Eubank after the former super middleweight arrived at the airport to talk to promoter Frank Warren, who was flying to Amsterdam with Hamed.
