HOWARD PERRY seems to blame “Theresa May and her lot” for all the problems facing the “just about managings” (Letters, October 19).

While I do genuinely sympathise with everybody who is struggling, it doesn’t help to simply hit out at just anybody for the sake if it.

If we examine today’s problems they can be largely attributed to three things - high house prices, low wages and debt.

House prices have been rising continuously since the early 1970s - a period covering over 42 years which included a total of five years of coalition government, 17 years of Labour government and now 20 years of Conservative government, of which just over one year is “Theresa May and her lot”.

Nobody has done enough to solve this problem but at least the current government are tying to get house building up again.

Low wages are mainly a side-effect of technological advancement replacing the need for human input in many traditional jobs.

The days of factories brimming over with workers are gone and, like it or not, many new jobs are low paid.

At least the current government have raised the income tax threshold taking many low paid workers out of paying tax and reducing tax for others in addition to raising the minimum wage.

They have also hit the higher paid by removing any tax free allowance from those earning over £100,000 per annum and reducing many tax avoidance schemes.

What we really need in this country is for everybody to come together to help get us out of this mess - not likely to happen sadly as most people want somebody else to do it.
