THIEVES tried to steal a cash machine from a North Yorkshire supermarket.

North Yorkshire Police said a group of three or four men used a telehandler tractor unit to try and break the ATM free from the wall of Sainsbury's in Stainsacre Lane, Whitby, at about 1.40am today.

The telehandler and a white Ford Transit van were recovered at the scene, and police said the suspects made off in a silver Audi estate car, heading in the direction of Scarborough.

Forensic examinations are taking place at the scene today, and anyone with information is urged to phone North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option two and ask for the Scarborough Serious Crime Team.
