Proposals to complete a York ring road scheme had finally been submitted to the Ministry of Health during an inquiry at York Guildhall.

Once the scheme was completed, York would have its very own ring road right around the city, by which vehicular traffic could pass from one side of the river to the other, avoiding the centre of the city.

A record entry of more than 200 was received for the 25th members’ sanction show of Malton, Norton and District Canine Association.

Almost every class on the schedule was splendidly filled and the society had never provided such a fine all-round exhibition of principal breeds of dogs.

Rail services all over Britain were once again to be hit by the guards’ refusal to work the controversial second man duties.

Holding an emergency meeting in London the board spokesman said, “no statement was available, but the dispute could include over 1,000 men.”

Yet another Selby organisation had been hit by lack of interest, this time it was Selby Old Time Dancing Club which was due to “wind up” at a last dinner on October 27.

The club, which for many years had a waiting list of would-be members, and membership of over 130 held dances every Wednesday in Selby’s Museum Hall with a band hired for every occasion.

Unfortunately, now the average attendance throughout the winter session had been less than 50, not enough to pay for the hire of the band and premises.

Green protesters narrowly escaped serious injury when they tried to block workmen felling trees at the former Naburn Hospital site in York.

The campaigners, fighting a £40 million out of town shopping complex, dodged a 50-foot lime tree which crashed down just inches away from one protestor.

And six-year-old Bradley Rawie was delighted to be off to Disneyland Paris courtesy of the Evening Press, thanks to his mum winning the Holiday Hotshots Competition with a picture off him taken during a trip to the Lake District.
