A BONFIRE spread to a nearby fence when a householder burned garden waste in the aftermath of ex-Hurricane Ophelia.
The average wind speed at the time was 25 mph and there were gusts of up to 40 mph at the time.
A member of the public was so concerned by the flames in a garden in Chapel Lane, Brayton, at 12.45pm yesterday that he dialled 999.
Selby firefighters answered the call but the person responsible for the bonfire managed to put out both the bonfire and the fencing panels before they arrived.
The firefighters hosed down the area and made sure it was safe before leaving.
