COUNCILLORS have given the green light to reveal a list of sites in Ryedale where 1,081 new homes will be built over the next 10 years.

The so-called local plan commits Ryedale to allocating land for housing developments between now and 2027.

At a meeting of Ryedale District Council on Thursday, councillors approved the formal publication of the site map, with 24 votes for and one against.

Councillor Lindsay Burr said: “We’ve been wanting this document signed off for a long time.

“As a council we need to know where we are going - and we have got that now.”

The plan includes two sites in Pickering, some small sites around Kirkbymoorside and other sites in “service villages” such as Slingsby.

The largest site planned is the Norton Lodge site to the east of Beverley Road in Norton, which would include a link road between Beverley Road and Scarborough Road.

Cllr Keane Duncan said: “There are more houses planned for my ward than all the others combined.

“There is a great deal of concern about schools and doctors’ surgeries.”

Cllr Elizabeth Shields said that a new primary school planned for the Beverley Road will cater for a large number of children.

The other site identified within the Malton and Norton limits is the current seat of the district council, Ryedale House in Old Malton.

However, this site was objected to by Cllr Paul Andrews, who said the Norton Lodge site fulfils the quota of houses for the towns.

He added that no development should take place until the HGV ban is in place at the Norton level-crossing.

Cllr Tim Thornton said: “We have electric car charging points planned for every house - that’s good, we’re moving into the 21st century.

“But I would encourage a condition of solar panels on every house too.”
