STRONG winds caused damage to houses and buildings in North Yorkshire overnight, as Storm Ophelia swept across the British Isles.

A fire crew was called to Hunters Way, near Knavesmire, in York, after a tree came down and broke through a property window.

Crews were sent to Acklam in Ryedale to put out a large fire to agricultural buildings, which was caused by an accidental spread from a bonfire due to the high winds.

Crews were also called to Hawthorn Avenue in Malton where a PVC door curtain had been blown into a security light and set on fire.

Meanwhile, a crew visited Commercial Street in Malton and removed a sign that was hanging dangerously over a footpath due to the high winds.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for North Yorkshire today, as Storm Ophelia continues to bring strong winds to the region.

There will be more strong, gusty winds this morning but these will gradually ease later today, the Met Office said.

The national weather service also said it will be largely cloudy across the region today, with outbreaks of rain.

Wind speeds of up to 20mph are expected in the York area.
