THE final phase of the Selby bypass reconstruction is due to finish on Sunday, and the road should be fully reopened for the start of the working week.

North Yorkshire County Council, which has been carrying out the work over the past three years, said the project is now nearly finished.

Contractor Cemex began the final phase on August 9 from the A19 Brayton roundabout to the Thorpe Willoughby roundabout.

Their woork involved deep repairs and reinstatement of the carriageway, with a stress-absorbing membrane built in to make it more stable.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Highways, said: "This project, which local people campaigned for over several years, ensures Selby has a bypass which will support the town’s economic growth.

"We are very grateful for the patience of local people during this work and hope they will now be able to reap the benefits."

Other sections were resurfaced in the final phase including Greencore roundabout and a stretch of the A63 towards Osgodby roundabout, East Common Lane and the A63 from the Thorpe Willoughby roundabout going towards Hambleton over the railway bridge.

Phase one of the scheme covered the A1041 Bawtry Road to the A19 at Barlby, and Phase two covered the A63 between and including the A19 Brayton roundabout and A1041 Wishing Well roundabout and their approaches.
