YORKSHIRE’S long-running devolution saga will be discussed by MPs today (Tuesday, October 10), in a Commons debate secured by a former Selby MP.
John Grogan, who now represents Keighley, has secured the adjournment debate after months of talks over a possible One Yorkshire deal.
Over the summer, talks took place in York and 17 out of 20 councils in the region formed a “coalition of the willing”, backing a single devolution deal for the county.
However, the Government has insisted it will not consider a “One Yorkshire” deal for the whole of Yorkshire, and instead said it is disappointed some South Yorkshire councils have pulled away from an already agreed £1 billion devolution deal. A spokesman said: “We remain ready and willing to work with local leaders to implement the deal and have no intention to undo the legislation that has already been enacted in Parliament, including legislation for a mayoral election in May 2018.”
