THE Press front page headline on September 27 read “York bid for Rugby League World Cup”.

The article stated that it was hoped to not only stage matches at the city’s planned new Community Stadium but also to host a country, as well as the parallel Women’s World Cup festival.

If this come off it would be a wonderful coup for York City Knights and also a wonderful sounding for the whole city of York.

I must however raise some caution due to the fact that trying to establish exactly what progress (if any) is actually being made on the new Community Stadium is proving to be difficult, if not impossible.

In May 2017, I wrote to Jason McGill, chairman of York City Football Club, requesting information as to the club’s future intentions for Bootham Crescent, bearing in mind the new Community Stadium. I received no reply.

Not to be outdone, in July I wrote to the chief executives department of City of York Council regarding the same matter and received a letter back from Ian Floyd, deputy chief executive, who informed me that: “In this instance the matter is one for the football club to respond to.”

The point of my letter is that no news seems to be forthcoming regarding the outcome of Bootham Crescent or more importantly regarding the proposed new Community Stadium.

I would have thought that more information would be made available to us, the residents of York, who after all will be picking up a large part of the cost of this proposed new Community Stadium.

Or is it all a fairytale?
