85 years ago

A dispute over the apportionment of the cost of three street lamps had a sequel in Richmond Police Court, after Richmond Corporation had summoned seven residents of Fontenary Road, under the Public Health Act.

According to one of the summoned residents the road was private property and the Corporation had no right to put the standards in without the sanction of the property owners.

Guest of honour at the annual bazaar of the Buckrose Conservative Association in Bridlington was the Viscountess Downe.

With an attendance of nearly 1,000 people the Viscountess opened the discussions with a reference to the recent resignation of several Liberal Ministers leaving the National Government “stronger than ever” according to Major Braithwaite MP of Bridlington.

York was treated to a festival of fashion thanks to two shops from the city both presenting fashion parades of its new season attire.

Roderick Tweedie exhibited a riot of colour in bold pinks, blues, emerald and orange and Yorkshire Co-operative Society presented their parade against a background of autumnal reds and golds.

With over 200 women gathered in the Museum Rooms that night was considered a success.

Staff from York Co-operative Society’s transport depot had been praised by York’s fire department after tackling a fire in an inspection pit which had spread to a lorry above at the Clementhorpe depot.

According to a spokesman: “There was no doubt that without their presence of mind it could have been much more.”

The sudden flare-up had happened after a spark from welding equipment dropped among oil-soaked sawdust.

And the York Minster Appeal Fund had received a donation of £50,000 from the city of Sheffield.

20 years ago

York holidaymakers who had been hit by the collapse of Sun Tours were suitably relieved after an Acomb travel firm had rapidly found them an alternative holiday.

Plans were now been drawn up to fly home an estimated 8,000 of Sun Tours holidaymakers who had been stranded abroad, mostly in Turkey, but also in the Greek islands, Tunisia and the Canaries.

Mickey Mouse and Mini Mouse took the lead roles as they started Selby’s annual half-marathon.

The 13-mile race, through surrounding villages had been completed by 234 runners, which included a fun run of one mile for its younger competitors.

And over in Skelton road surfacing was causing mayhem as tractors had to escort cars past the resurfacing works at 10mph.
