WHEN adding my support for dualling the A1237, I assumed the plan included addressing the main issue of bottlenecks at the roundabouts.

Any commuter can tell you the key component is that it be grade separated from the roads leading into the city (so they could cross it by means of overpasses or underpasses, for example, without interfering with the flow of traffic), just as the A64 is, which flows so much better, even when roadworks reduce it to a single lane.

Yet the council has decided to put ANPR cameras to prevent vehicles accessing Low Poppleton Lane via Millfield Lane, the only route with grade separation under the entire length of the A1237.

Wouldn’t it be smarter to allow those returning home to Nether Poppleton or visiting the local businesses to use this shortcut instead of them adding to the traffic at the roundabout crossing and choking the flow of the outer ring road even further? Has nothing been learned from the farce that was Lendal Bridge or are the shots really being called by the same incompetent officers that implemented that crazy idea?

Whatever the case, please stop copying the Labour manual on how to waste public money and do something useful like actually fixing the roads. Conservative principles advocate the state interfering less in people’s lives and Liberal Democrats are supposed to advocate freedom of movement; start practising what you preach and stop looking for excuses to tax people for trying to drive along the shortest routes.
