NORTH Yorkshire County Council is encouraging residents to rethink their bathroom regime to support Recycle Week, which runs from today.

Research by New Recycle Now reveals that only 52 per cent of bathroom items go in the recycling bin in UK homes. If everyone in North Yorkshire recycled one more deodorant spray, this would save enough energy to power a typical primary school for eight weeks.

The County Council is teaming up with Recycle Now to encourage residents to recycle bathroom items like empty deodorants and finished-with fragrances.

County Councillor Andrew Lee, executive member for Waste Management, said: “We’re asking residents to rethink their bathroom routines by demonstrating that what goes around comes around."

"Aerosols such as deodorants and hair sprays can be recycled again and again without any loss in quality, so you may see them come back as parts of your mobile phone, dishwasher or even another aerosol can.”

If you love singing in the shower or getting ready to some top tunes, being recycling savvy, such as recycling three empty deodorants, can provide these essentials to our ‘getting ready’ routine by saving enough energy to power a shower for eight minutes or a home sound system for 32 hours.
