A TEENAGE driver wrote off his car and lost his driving licence because he underestimated how long alcohol affects the body, York magistrates heard.

Martin Butterworth, prosecuting, said a breath test showed that Harrison James Bonney, 19, was nearly twice the alcohol limit as he drove along Beech Close in Sherburn-in-Elmet.

He crashed into a parked car and damaged both.

Bonney, of Orchard Close, Monk Fryston, pleaded guilty to drink driving.

He was banned from driving for 20 months, fined £60 and ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and a £30 statutory surcharge.

He told magistrates he had thought he was under the drink drive limit. He had stopped drinking an hour before he started driving and had also had some chips.

The crash wrote off his car. He was on his way home after dropping off some friends.
