STORM Aileen has brought trees down and caused flooding in York and North Yorkshire.

A huge Lime tree blew down on a parked vehicle and blocked the road in Main Street, Upper Poppleton, at about 4.30am, said York councillor Ian Gillies, who lives locally.

He said workmen had arrived to begin removing the tree, which landed on a Mitsubishi pick-up truck, after which it would then become clear how badly damaged it had been.

The vehicle belonged to Heath Moore, who lives in Main Street.

Traffic police tweeted that the River Ure burst its banks last night between Bainbridge and Aysgarth in the Yorkshire Dales, and is completely across the A684 making it impassable.

One driver was caught out by standing water in the road on the B6265 between Risplith and Fellbeck but was fortunately uninjured.

Officers also tweeted that reports had also been coming in of rocks in the road on the A684 between Hawes and Bainbridge, and there were also reports of trees down on A1039 Filey Road between Folkton and Flixton.

Northern Powergrid said it was seeking to restore electricity supplies after a power cut affected 60 properties in the YO25 postcode area in East Yorkshire at 6am.

The Met Office had warned last night that power cuts and damage to trees were expected in York and North Yorkshire early today as Storm Aileen brought gusts of up to 75mph.

The Met Office issued an 'amber warning' yesterday, meaning people should be prepared for a brief spell of very strong westerly winds during the early hours as the Atlantic depression crossed the region.

But while the York area experienced heavy rain and strong winds overnight, the impact appears to have been less than feared.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said it had not been called out to any weather-related incidents, other than a car stranded in floodwater on the A684 at Carperby in Wensleydale.
