A NEW beer is being launched in honour of York Britpop legends Shed Seven prior to a UK tour by the band.

Members of the Indie group will be at the Old White Swan in Goodramgate, York, on Wednesday September 20 for the launch of Going for Gold - which is the name of the band’s biggest hit single.

The limited edition golden ale is being produced by Rudgate Brewery, of Tockwith, in collaboration with the band as part of Nicholson’s Beer Showcase 2017, an annual celebration of ‘Britain’s best breweries and beer’ at Nicholson’s pubs.

Fans will be able to take part in a competition - due to be launched on social media shortly - to visit Rudgate Brewery and find out how the Going for Gold beer is made.

The tour will be followed by a launch party at the Old White Swan at which they can meet and greet members of the band.

Fans will also be able to just turn up at the pub for a chance to meet their idols.

Craig Lee, managing director of Rudgate Brewery, said he first met Shed Seven in the early 1990s when his university band supported them at the Fibbers music venue in York.

“Last year, during a meeting with Nicholson’s Pubs, we discussed previous band and brewery collaborations and it seemed a no-brainer for us to work with Shed Seven – and they were thrilled to be on board!” he said.

“Deciding to release the beer during the Nicholson’s Beer Showcase was perfect timing too, as it comes just ahead of the band’s forthcoming ‘Shed-cember’ tour.”

The beer is said to have ‘hints of citrus and fruity mango flavours’.

The festival, which runs from Monday, September 11 to October 22, will take place at all Nicholson’s pubs, which in York also include The Punch Bowl in Stonegate, Harkers in St Helen’s Square and The Cross Keys in Goodramgate.

Harkers and the Punch Bowl, as well as the old White Swan, will sell Going for Gold.

A spokeswoman said the festival will feature an impressive 28 new beers and a selection of ‘unmissable events’, including guest talks from beer sommeliers and breweries, workshops, tastings, exclusive offers and competitions.
