A person has been airlifted to hospital following the crash that brought chaos to Knaresborough during this afternoon's rush hour. 

Part of the town's A658 bypass has been closed since shortly before 5pm while emergency services deal with the aftermath of the collision involving three vehicles. 

Firefighters rescued one person who had been trapped in their vehicle. 

The incident began at about 4.35pm when the vehicles collided on the B6163 close to its junction with the A658.   The by-pass was then closed between its junctions with the B6164 next to St James Retail Park and the A661 Wetherby to Harrogate Road. 

Traffic was diverted via Knaresborough town centre and the A59

North Yorkshire Police immediately issued an appeal for witnesses to the incident, but have given no further details.
