MARRIAGE, family, good health, and a banana every day are the secrets of a long life, according to a York woman who has reached 101 years old.
Dorothy Dixon marked her 101st birthday on Saturday, August 26. When she was born in 1916, the Battle of the Somme was raging and King George V was on the throne.
Dorothy, who lives at the RMBI's Connaught Court home with a sherry morning in the lounge, and flowers and chocolates from the home's managers.
Dorothy said: "I can't believe I am at this grand age! It must be because I've had a happy life, I've been so lucky with a smashing marriage, wonderful family and good health, and, of course, a banana every day."
Activities Coordinators Stephanie and Fran added: "Dorothy has many friends at Connaught Court, who came along to congratulate and celebrate her special day, singing Happy Birthday. One of our residents also played the piano for her."
Dorothy's family visited on the day to take her out for lunch and spend time together. As she is a big fan of horse racing, Dorothy also enjoyed watching the Ebor Festival at York racecourse on TV.
