CAWOOD Bridge reopened at the weekend after a £1 million refurbishment by North Yorkshire County Council.

The swing bridge was painted and had steel plates installed to increase its capacity from 7.5 tonnes to 10 tonnes.

The work was scheduled in the school summer holidays when the volume of traffic is lower, and the contractors worked seven days a week.

Some work remains to finish the underside of the bridge and clear the site compound, and next year the council plans to replace the motor and operating system with new, custom-made equipment - requiring a closure of only a few days.
