85 years ago

Speaking to members of the York and District Dairymen’s Association Councillor A Wiseman had condemned pasteurised milk as “injurious to children and inimical to the best interests of the rising generation.”

While the York Co-operative Society had been quite fair to the York and District producers in deciding not to import milk, it was in his view “the best way and, in fact the only proper way,” of supplying milk, was straight from the cow.

“Milk should not be tampered with,” and he urged mothers not to buy milk which had been specially treated.

The second annual Skelton and district show and sale had been held with an increase in entries.

And the St Michael’s Church, Spennithorne, choir left for their annual outing to Scarborough however owing to the rain the party spent the day patronising indoor amusements.

Television’s “Wedding of the Year” had became real life to many viewers.

With only hours to go before Granada TV’s Coronation Street bride, Elsie Tanner, walked down the aisle for her “wedding” to American sergeant Steve Tanner, packets and parcels had arrived at the studio addressed to Mr and Mrs Tanner and like any wedding they were to remain unopened until the “happy couple” returned from aboard.

York’s long-haired youths, instead of standing on street corners, should take up gardening, a former Lord Mayor had suggested.

“I would like to see these people encouraged to take up such a hobby,” said Ald William Bridge, at opening the 12th annual horticultural show of the Poppleton Road Allotment Society.

Thousands more were joining the queues in London as the nation poured its heart out after the tragic death of Princess Diana.

Mourners waited for up to nine hours to sign one of the 43 Books of Condolence in St James Palace.

In view of the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales The York Press had decided to amend its edition structure to make sure all readers received full coverage of the event.

A special North Yorkshire tribute edition was also available with all profits to be donated to Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

Racegoers were forced to huddle under umbrellas and step over puddles as the first day of the September meeting of York races turned into a washout.
