A FORMER Royal Navy Seaman has celebrated his centenary. George Kay, a resident of Highfield Care Home in Scarthingwell, near Tadcaster, celebrated with a special lunch accompanied by residents and his family.

Born in Kent, the eldest of six children, he moved Liverpool and Bury and before moving to Highfield, he lived in Tadcaster with his daughter Maureen Fairbain. He has three brothers still living, one in Indonesia, a daughter, and four grandchildren.

He served 17 years in the Navy, in Africa, Mombasa, and patrolling the seas around Malta, and met Prince Philip on a visit to flooding in Kent. Mr Kay served on HMS Peacock, sponsored by the former Tadcaster Rural District Council, and was a keen cyclist.

His daughter Maureen said: “He loved cycling, and still is interested. He regularly receives news from the old club in Liverpool.”
